The app controlled love egg is one of those products everyone has seen and hardly anyone can explain properly. How do you put it in? Can anyone tell from the outside? How far does the control reach? Can people hear it? These are the questions people search for most before buying one, and here are the answers, no beating about the bush.
What it is and how it works
A love egg, or vibrating egg, is a small oval or rounded toy that's worn internally. It has a motor, a rechargeable battery and a tail or cord that stays outside so you can take it out easily.
The app version connects to your phone. From the screen you choose the vibration mode, turn the intensity up or down and, if you like, hand control to someone else. There are two ways to connect:
- Bluetooth: the phone needs to be close by, usually in the same room. The exact range depends on the model and on any walls in between.
- Internet: the phone the egg is paired with acts as a bridge, and another person controls it from their own phone, wherever they are. There's no distance limit.
How to use it, step by step
- Charge it before the first use. That way it won't cut out halfway.
- Download the app and pair it. Switch the egg on, open the app and connect by Bluetooth. It takes a minute.
- Wash it with warm water and mild soap.
- Apply a little water based lubricant. With silicone, never use a silicone based one, as it can damage the material.
- Insert it slowly as far as feels comfortable, leaving the tail outside. There's no exact depth: your comfort is the guide.
- Try the modes, starting at the lowest intensity.
- To take it out, pull gently on the tail. Switch it off, wash it and store it dry.
How long can you wear it?
There's no universal figure. The practical reference is the battery: Bulby, for example, runs for up to 60 minutes on one charge. If you feel any discomfort, take it out. And don't sleep with it in.
Can people hear it?
It depends on the intensity and on your surroundings. On one piece silicone models with the motor embedded inside, the sound is fairly muffled, especially at low settings. In a silent room at full power, you'll hear something. Somewhere with background noise, it's unlikely anyone will notice.
As a couple and at a distance
This is where the app controlled egg stands apart from everything else. You can play in the same room, with your partner holding the phone, or hundreds of miles apart: you share an access code in the app and the other person takes control from their own phone. Some apps, like ActiveJoy®, even include video calling inside the app.

Privacy: check what the app asks for
Many apps for intimate toys make you create an account with your email or your name. Before buying, check what data is required. ActiveJoy® doesn't require registration, a profile or an email to use its main features.
Cleaning and care
- Wash it before and after each use with warm water and mild soap.
- Dry it thoroughly and store it in a fabric pouch, away from other toys.
- Don't charge it while it's wet.
- If it isn't waterproof, don't submerge it. The INTOYOU App Series models are waterproof.
Bulby: the app controlled egg people choose most
Of the whole range, Bulby is the best seller, and it's easy to see why. Its bulb shaped body focuses the vibration where it counts, and the long curved tail makes it easy to remove at any moment. The power button sits at the tip of the tail, so you can change modes without touching the egg.
- One piece injected liquid silicone, with no seams, and the motor inside.
- 10 vibration modes.
- Control by Bluetooth and over the internet with no distance limit, via the ActiveJoy® app.
- Music sync, touch control, control by moving your phone, Video Mode and video calling.
- Size: 9.7 × 3.2 cm.
- USB charging in 45 minutes, up to 60 minutes of use.
- Waterproof.
- In hot pink and lavender.
If you're looking for something different
- A more rounded shape: Logan, also one piece liquid silicone with the button on the tail.
- Movement, not just vibration: NexEgg Motion, with up and down thrusting and two motors. It states a guaranteed Bluetooth range of 10 metres.
- Two colour double layer silicone: the Vibrating Egg with App, softer and more flexible to the touch.
They all work with the same app. To see what each control mode does, take a look at our guide to ActiveJoy's control modes.
